Location: Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia
Date: 4th-7th February 2015
Preparation for what would be an explosive 2015 MotoGP season got underway in Malaysia at the Sepang International Circuit on the 4th of February. Despite being called a ‘winter test’, there is nothing that resembles Winter in the sweltering heat and humidity of Malaysia.
This year was no exception and Valentino chose a funny design to take to Malaysia that was an ironic take on the whole ‘winter test’ and poked fun at the tropical temperatures at Sepang. As a joke Rossi had a helmet design created to make it look like a chunky knitted woolly hat, complete with winter symbols like snowflakes and reindeer. Think of the worst Christmas jumper you have seen and you will be about half-way there.
This helmet design has since been called the Valentino Rossi ‘woolly hat’, ‘ugly jumper’, or ‘ugly sweater’ design….for pretty obvious reasons.
As usual the design was created by Aldo Drudi and it was created with a fluorescent yellow and blue colour scheme. The top of the helmet has a giant snowflake, with cable-knitted lines containing smaller images of snowflakes, reindeer, and Christmas trees, and Rossi’s number 46 is made to look like it has been knitted into the rear of the helmet.

And to really hammer home the joke, Rossi’s entire Yamaha crew had matching woolly hats made for them in the exact same design – not that they wore them much in the boiling Malaysian heat.

The design obviously helped Valentino keep a cool head as he posted the second fastest time on the first day day of testing, finishing only 0.118s behind Marc Marquez. Rossi obviously was feeling strong and positive after the test as he stated that he was out for his 10th World Championship during 2015.
