The 2009 was another successful season for ‘The Doctor’ and it saw Valentino Rossi take his 9th World Championship Title. Rossi’s main rival throughout the season was his team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, but Rossi managed to tie up the World Title at Sepang with one race left.
The season was once again full of action with the highlight probably being the fierce duel between Rossi and Lorenzo at the Catalunya MotoGP where Rossi took victory with a seemingly impossible overtaking maneuver on the very last corner (you can watch the highlights here).
Another notable moment for Valentino came at the Dutch GP at Assen where he scored his 100th career victory, making him the second rider in motorcycle grand prix history to take 100 wins (Giacomo Agostini was the other).
The 5 Continents design was Valentino’s primary helmet, but he also produced some great one-off designs throughout the season, you can check them all out below.
2009 Rossi Helmets:
The Celebr-8 helmet was designed to commemorate Rossi winning his 8th World Championship title and was presented to him in 2008. In 2009 Rossi has been testing in a yellow version of the original 2008 design.
The Rossi ‘5 Continents’ design has been carried over from 2008 as the primary race helmet that Rossi is wearing for the 2009 season.
The design is a spectacular and eye-catching variation of Rossi’s trademark sun and moon themes where each ray of the sun represents one of the 5 continents that MotoGP races in.
As always, Valentino Rossi produced a special helmet design for the Mugello round of the 2009 MotoGP season. This design had Rossi’s hands painted on either side of the helmet to give the impression of Rossi holding his head in his hands. A cartoon on the rear featured his two Bulldog’s in a similar pose.
Rossi came to his home GP of Misano with a totally unexpected helmet design. Rossi had the donkey’s face from Shrek placed on the helmet, and the words ‘The Donkey’ on the rear – designed to make fun of himself after the previous week’s crash in the Indianapolis Grand Prix, where he saw his 50-point lead cut by half by team-mate Jorge Lorenzo.
Valentino Rossi claimed his 9th World Title at the Malaysian MotoGP with a 4th place finish in the race. Rossi celebrated with a new helmet design that featured a cartoon chicken laying an egg. The helmet design was based on an old Italian saying.
