Position: 1st

It is customary now for Valentino Rossi to show up to the Mugello MotoGP round with a custom designed helmet, but in his first few Grand Prix seasons he didn’t really change his helmet graphics for local races (except for Imola in 1998)

In 1999 all that changed when Valentino came to Mugello in a completely customised bike livery and matching helmet.

Rossi came to race in a swirling psychedelic design for the Mugello GP in his 250cc championship winning year. Valentino went on to win the race with Ralf Waldmann coming second, and Rossi’s future team mate Tohru Ukawa coming third. Rossi’s 1999 Mugello victory marked his second victory of the season – his first win of the season came at Jerez.

After his victory the crowd went crazy and stormed the track, surrounding and congratulating Rossi – the chaos was so intense and the crowds so think that Rossi actually crashed off his Aprilia RS250. Check the video footage of the incident below:

Valentino Rossi’s bike livery had “Valentipeace & Love” written on it and Rossi said the design was a tribute to the Peace and Love vibe. The cartoon figure on the rear of the helmet is based on an Italian cartoon character called ‘Paparinik’ – Rossi developed his own variation of the character called ‘Valentinik’ and for this helmet design he can be seen with flowers emerging from his gun. The rest of the helmet was light blue with yellow swirling patterns flowing across it, and a peace symbol at the rear. The Sun and Moon motifs remained on the sides of the helmet.
