Valentino Rossi 2017-2018 Winter Test Helmet (Huichol)

Valentino Rossi 2017 Winter Test Helmet (Huichol)

Valentino Rossi Huichol

Valentino Rossi usually gets a special helmet design created for the MotoGP Winter Tests, and in recent years they have mostly been designed around a running joke of having ‘winter tests’ in the tropical heat of Malaysia at the Sepang circuit.

Past winter test helmet designs have included the ‘woolly hat‘, ‘the snowman‘, and the ‘snow-globe‘.

This year Valentino Rossi has taken a different direction and has produced one of the most beautiful and intricate designs that we have seen him on track with in years.

Rossi’s new 2017 and 2018 winter testing helmet is based on the Mexican art style known as Huichol. the Huichol are Native Americans that reside in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango. The Huichol are famous for their yarn paintings and more recently their bead art. It is this beadwork style that Valentino Rossi’s new helmet design is based on.

The Huichol traditionally make the beads from clay, glass, plastic, or metal and then press them on to wooden forms in order to create their designs. Racing around a track at high speed on a motorbike whilst wearing a wooden beaded helmet isn’t a great idea, so Rossi and Aldo Drudi decided to recreate the effect by painting Rossi’s AGV Pista GP R helmet to make it look like it had been created from the Huichol’s beadwork.

The effect is stunning, and it features a beaded sun and moon on the top of helmet and a beaded turtle at the rear – two of Rossi’s long running themes. Davide Degli Innocenti, the graphics and colouring manager at Drudi Performance basically hand-painted the dots across the entire helmet to give the ‘bead effect’.

AGV showed off the helmet on their instagram feed, see below:

Valentino Rossi became fascinated with Huichol art on a recent trip to Mexico and he was enamoured with the style and the fact that Huichol folk-art also uses images of turtles and the sun, and various other symbols and motifs close to Valentino’s heart.

Valentino Rossi talks about the inspiration and describes the helmet design below:

“Huichol art immediately intrigued me, because it uses many of my symbols, like the sun and moon or the turtle. We have tried to recreate the effect of the beads that the Mexicans use to bring colour and shape to these objects, but to do so with a Valentino Rossi twist. The helmet looks really good, Aldo Drudi did a great job, as did Davide in particular – hecreated the beads with a brush, one by one. We might say that the helmet has become a work of art, something we’ve never seen before.”

Fans are going to be holding their breath waiting to find out if this will ever get released in production or as a limited edition – I expect it will fly off the shelves if AGV ever release it as a replica.

Valentino Rossi’s 2017 Mugello helmet (Francesco Totti & Nicky Hayden tribute)

Valentino Rossi 2017 Mugello helmet

Valentino Rossi Mugello 2017

Here it is, full photos of Valentino Rossi’s new helmet for the 2017 Mugello MotoGP.

The helmet design created by Aldo Drudi and Valentino Rossi is a tribute to both Francesco Totti and Nicky Hayden.

Francesco Totti is a close friend of Valentino Rossi and he recently retired from a long career at Roma football club, so Rossi has had this design created to celebrate his long career.

A cartoon Valentino Rossi can be seen on the top of the helmet, complete with a plaster to signify Rossi’s current injury that he sustained in a Motocross accident that almost ruled him out form this year’s Mugello MotoGP, about to take a penalty. Rossi is pictured as saying “shall I chip” – which is a reference to a “paneka” penalty, which is also the title of Totti’s recent autobiography.

The rear of the helmet has the phrase “One captain. There is only one captain” as a tribute to Totti.

Valentino has also merged his famous race number ’46’ into Nicky Hayden’s race number ’69’ as a tribute to his former team-mate and all-round MotoGP good-guy, who sadly lost his life in a cycling accident. The ‘469’ number is positioned at the sides of the helmet.

Many other riders at Mugello this year also had a number 69, or some other tribute to Nicky Hayden on their helmet or leathers and 69 seconds of silence will be observed prior to the Mugello MotoGP race on Sunday as a tribute to Hayden.

MotoGP winter tests got underway this week at Sepang for the 2017 season, and many of the riders are out on track in their new liveries giving their MotoGP machines their first shakedown of 2017.

Valentino Rossi usually has a new helmet design for these test sessions and over the last few years he has been creating designs that poke fun at the MotoGP tradition of having a winter test in tropical conditions like Mayalsia.

This year is no different and Rossi has hit the track sporting new graphics on his AGV Pista GP helmet that show his home town of Tavullia on a smowy winter night.

Check the photos below.

Making Valentino Rossi’s ‘Sweet Home Misano’ helmet (video)

Valentino Rossi Misano The Blues Brothers

Valentino Rossi Misano The Blues Brothers

It is now a longstanding tradition that Rossi will always bring a custom one-off helmet design to the Italian GPs on the MotoGP calander and over the years he has raced in many memorable designs.

For the 2016 Misano MotoGP Valentino Rossi produced a special helmet that the fans loved that was based on Rossi’s favorite film – “The Blues Brothers”.

The design featured Valentino and his best friend Uccio dressed up at the main characters from the film, with the slogan ‘Sweet Home Misano’ printed on the lid. The helmet also featured various other iconic imagery from the film, like the police car known as ‘The Bluesmobile’.

The design was created by Aldo Drudi and you can see a hyperlapse video below of how his studio created this iconic helmet step by step below

By the way, AGV have just made this helmet available to buy as a limited edition in their amazing, but very expensive, top-line Pista GP R helmet. See it here.

No idea who this dude is, but man, that is quite the collection of Valentino Rossi helmets – he probably has a van or a trailer just to haul those helmets around with him in the event of photo opportunities like the one above.

He has created the number 46 out of 100% Valentino Rossi replica helmets, as well as offical Rossi replica motorcycle gloves and boots.

It’s not all Valentino Rossi though – I see a Jorge Lorenzo, a couple of Simoncelli’s, an Iannone, a Tomizawa, and various other rider hemets at the bottom.

The front of the t-shirt is plain white with the official AGV logo, and the sleeve of the t-shirt features a small AGV Italian tricolour stripe. The images of the helmets cover the back of the t-shirt.

It is 100% cotton and fully machine washable.

Valentino Rossi’s special helmet design for the 2016 Misano MotoGP has been revealed today and it features a tribute to one of Valentino Rossi’s favorite films – The Blues Brothers.

Rossi and Uccio both feature on the front of the helmet dressed as the iconic Blues Brothers, and the words ‘Sweet Home Misano’ is written in large letters above them – this is a play on words with the Blues Brothers song ‘Sweet Home Chicago’ from the film. The side of the helmet also features the police car from the film.

On the rear Valentino Rossi’s cartoon dogs and cat are also dressed as Blues Brothers.

Amazing Valentino Rossi ‘Shark’ motorcycle paint-job

Valentino Rossi Shark Bike

Remember the Shark helmet design that Valentino Rossi wore for the 2015 Misano MotoGP race – well someone has taken that design and applied to their entire motorcycle. And it has turned out really well – you have to admire the creative mind that came up with this, plus the execution is perfect.

The original helmet was created to signify the pressure that Valentino Rossi was under at Misano and Valentino stated that it symbolised the fact that he was a target for all other riders to beat given that it was his home race. On the original design Rossi was portrayed as a cartoon yellow fish being hunted down by a large blue shark.

In reality most people assumed the design signified Rossi’s slight lead in the Championship over Jorge Lorenzo who was the shark closing in on the fish of Rossi.

Anyway, back to the bike – this is an incredible paint job that features the Shark on the main tank of the motorcycle and the fish is placed on the front mud-guard.

This is one amazing custom paint-job for a motorcycle.

Valentino Rossi 2016 yellow cap

Right, this is going straight into our shopping basket – this is the new Valentino Rossi MotoGP baseball cap in yellow.

This is the new version of Rossi’s baseball cap that he first wore during the tense pre-season race conference, where Rossi, Lorenzo and Marquez all came face-to-face for the first time since the dramatic events at the end of the 2015 MotoGP season, and it was met with huge approval from fans who went straight to twitter to ask where they could buy one.

The hat attracted a lot of attention – probably because pretty much the entire cap is in bright yellow (aside from the sponsor logos), making it a very eye-catching piece of merchandise..

Yellow Mugello goes up in smoke for Valentino Rossi

rossi 46

rossi 46

Every year at the Mugello MotoGP the crowd is decked out in yellow and they show their support for their local hero Valentino Rossi by letting off yellow smoke bombs. Plumes of yellow can be seen billowing from most of the stands around the iconic Italian circuit on race day.

But it was smnoke that signalled the end of Valentino Rossi’s dream of winning at Mugello for the first time since 2008. The Doctor suffered an engine failure on lap 9 which saw his Yamaha M1 engulfed in smoke forcing him to retire from the race. This is Rossi’s second DNF of the 2016 season.

Here is what Valentino had to say about the incident: “In English they say ‘shit happens’!”

“It’s a great shame, because it’s always a pity when you have a problem with the bike in the race, but here even more so because it was in Mugello in front of all the crowd. I was very competitive in the race and very fast, I had a good start and I was there. I think I could have fought for the victory because I had a very good feeling and a strong pace. It’s also a great shame because this zero points score for the championship weighs very heavily. Lorenzo and Marquez finished first and second, so now the distance is hard, but it’s like this. The positive thing is that I was competitive over the whole weekend and I was strong. I could have fought for the victory, so now we wait for the next race in Montmeló. Catalunya is one of my favourite tracks, I like to race there a lot, so I think we will have a good potential, but now we have to wait ten days and after that we will see.”
